2022 September 18 – Kaua’i, Hawaii, USA

Starting off my first visit to Hawaii we decided to spend a few days exploring Kaua’i, the garden island. I chose this place because I wanted to see the Napali coast that seems to be featured in every photo set related to Hawaii.

Day 1 – Helos, Kayaks and Beaches

For our first day we took a helicopter tour. I ended up purchasing front seats and a photo/video package. While it was really expensive for the two of us ($1k+) this was one of those once in a lifetime, do it right moments in my opinion. The main way to see the Napali coast is by air, boat, or a long hike.

Next up, we drove north towards Hanalei Bay. It takes about 45-60 mins from LIH, but has some really great views. Stops included Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Valley Lookout, Kayaking in the river next to Hanalei Bay, and visiting Ha’ena Beach (and Maniniholo Dry Cave). We also drove to the gates of Ha’ena State Park, but did not have reservations (this is the trailhead for the Napali – Kalalau Trail). We hope to return and spend some time hiking at the end of this road.

North Shore beaches seem to be great near the end of the day.

Day 2 – Tubing Adventures

For our second day we went tubing on an old sugarcane plantation. This may be one of my favorite activities for the whole trip to Hawaii. It involves an open air ride up into the hills, lazy river style tubing down canals and through tunnels, and a picnic lunch at the end.

After our tour we took a drive over to Wailua Falls to enjoy the view.

Next, we headed to Kapa’a town to find a Shave Ice location recommended by our tubing tour guides. Wialua Shave ice is now my favorite place to get Shave Ice.

We ended the day at the tiki bar at our hotel, enjoying the breeze and the beach. I of course had to enjoy a Blue Hawaiian actually in Hawaii! Off we go to Maui next…
