2022 September 22 – Mau’i , Hawaii, USA

Here is the summary of a few days spent exploring Mau’i. (you’re welcome!)

We stayed at an apartment in Kihei, a nice central location with a beach.

First, we started with a visit to Haleakala National Park. Driving our rental Jeep, we made our way towards the summit. It looked like the day was going to be rained out; however, once we reached a certain altitude, we actually drove above the cloud layer and enjoyed some amazing views. I hope to return here someday to see either a sunrise or sunset.

Driving back down the mountain, we drove to the western coast town of Lahaina and enjoyed some shave ice.

The next day, we focused on exploring the Road to Hana.

I admit, this is a bit of a tourist trap, but I still like to explore given this situation. Starting out around 6am we got out ahead of the tourist vans and maintained that theme all day. This road is no joke and features some rather scary, narrow sections.

Making it to the town of Hana we enjoyed a swim at the Hana Bay Beach Park. Next, we had a grilled chicken lunch at Brudda Hutts BBQ. After that we drove a little further to Wailua Falls. Since we still had our swim gear from the beach, we went swimming here. I still feel a little torn. On the one hand swimming in a Hawaiian waterfall pool, for me, was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would have forever regretting not jumping in. On the other hand I admit I was one of those tourists that are ruining the ecology.

The drive back to central Mau’i was also challenging, slow, and weaving. I am so glad we did this drive! We ended this trip with a great Sunset and Sunrise before heading off to O’ahu to meet up with our friends.
