2021 December 4 – San Antonio, Texas, USA

My last race of the year has occurred. This little gem in Texas is a new experience I have been waiting to enjoy for quite a few years. San Antonio is known for its River Walk area and The Alamo. Taking a flight from Ontario, CA, I arrived in San Antonio late Friday night and checked into my hotel. I started my weekend with a visit to the Race Expo to get my packet.

Next, I wanted to explore the Riverwalk. The San Antonio River Walk is the heart of the city. As the #1 attraction in Texas, the River Walk is full of dining, shopping, and cultural experiences. It was a cloudy day, but I still enjoyed exploring this part of town. There are actually small cruises that can be taken, but I opted not to take one and walked instead. These paths get really crowded as the day gets later.

Needing some fuel for my race on the next day I decided to seek out some authentic Texas BBQ. I found a restaurant called Pinkertons where the food is served deli-style (by weight) and really enjoyed myself.

Next, I ventured over to a market area called El Mercado (aka Market Square). I love these kinds of small shops selling arts, crafts, and local foods. It reminded me of some of the shops I had visited in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I didn’t actually buy anything, but really enjoyed the experience.

For my last stop of the day, I went and visited the site of the historic Alamo. I first learned about this place in the 1980s watching the comedy film Peewee’s Big Adventure. The movie nerd in me wanted to ask about the basement. I enjoyed reading all the displays and history of the place. It was a little crowded.

At this point, I headed back to my hotel to rest for the race tomorrow. Here is one last view of the Alamo with the Christmas Tree.
