2021 October 17 – Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA

Since it was so close to Zion, we decided to make a day trip to Bryce Canyon. My first impression is that this felt like visiting 1/2 of the Grand Canyon; however, still a very beautiful place to see.

This location is known for having the largest concentration of Hoodoos on the planet. A hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, or earth pyramid) is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos typically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements. They generally form within sedimentary rock and volcanic rock formations.

We spent our afternoon exploring the main attractions. Driving to the last stop along UT-63 we arrived at Rainbow Point. At 9,115 ft (2,778 m) this and Yovimpa Point are the highest viewpoints in the park. We also spent some time hiking the 1 mile loop to see some of the amazing views here.

After this, we made our way back along the road towards the gate and stopped at multiple viewpoints. This reminded me of our time spent at Crater Lake national park. There is some serious hiking at this national park that I want to come back and enjoy at another time.
