After a few good days of exploring Eagle River and a little more of Anchorage my friends invited me to take a road trip south along the Kenai Peninsula, visit the Russian River, and then enjoy some halbut fishing in Homer. What I have learned is that unlike Ohio where everything is just a few hours away, Alaska often requires 8-14 hours of driving to see some of the major sites near Anchorage.
The drive along the US 1 was absolutely stunning. What an amazing combination of mountains, rivers, inlets, and forests!
One of our first stops was near the Russian River. It was the peak of Salmon Fly Fishing Season. Many of the residents of the Anchorage area book the camp sites full months in advance, so you can not just show up here without a plan. My friend’s son-in-law invited us to visit his spot and even showed us some live fly fishing.
Eventually, we made it to the Homer Spit, where Highway 1 ends. This harbor area is known for wonderful fishing tours and other outdoor activities. Here, we would enjoy some chartered halibut fishing. Great eating!
